Microsoft Hardware + Philippe Starck Collaboration
Design: Marina McDonagh & Jim Li; Production: Julie Davidson
Microsoft enlisted French designer Philippe Starck to create a bold new version of its optical mouse, and they asked Radarworks to help build excitement and interest around the launch of the new product: Microsoft Optical Mouse by Starck.
Microsoft also needed packaging for the Starck mouse that was just as visually intriguing as the teaser campaign. Radarworks responded with a square package with a brushed metal appearance that sets it apart from all other mouse packaging. The border on the front of the box forms a picture frame, treating the mouse like the work of art that it is. The mouse itself features a unique oval design divided into two hemispheres by a lighted strip in either blue or orange. The packaging emphasizes the uniqueness of the design with a clear plastic window that is molded to the shape of the mouse.
To further validate the creative execution, Philippe Starck showcased the agency creative on his web site. In addition, the teaser was so well received at Microsoft, it was placed on the www.microsoft.com home page.
